KML Layers

Lightning strike data can be found by following the 'Current Lightning' link on the AFS 'Maps / Imagery / Geospatial' page.

1. Zoom to the area you want to make a layer for.
2. Click the 'Download KML' button on the top toolbar.
3. Change the 'Layer Name' to 'Today'. Leave the other dropdown menus alone.
4. Click 'OK'
5. In the Placemark Name dropdown menu choose 'Date/Time' and in the Placemark Description dropdown menu choose 'STROKETYPE'. All other fields can be left blank.
6. Click 'OK'.
   • If you get an error choose an area of the map that doesn't show Russia.
   • The map export app doesn't like areas West of -180 degrees longitude.
   • Use the 'Quick View' drop down menu to select your area of interest.
7. Click the 'open the KML file' link.
8. On an iPad/iPhone you can tap on the 'Open in...' link to open it directly in PDF Maps.
9. On a computer you can load the saved .kml file into PDF Maps through iTunes File Sharing or send it to an email account connected to the iPad.

Current Fires can be found by following the 'Statewide Fires' link on the AFS 'Maps / Imagery / Geospatial' page.

1. Uncheck all boxes under 'Map Layers' on the right except the first box 'XX Active WildFires'.
2. Click the 'Download KML' button on the top toolbar.
3. Make sure the 'Layer Name' is set to 'XX Active WildFires'.
4. Click 'OK'.
5. Set the 'Placemark Name' dropdown menu to 'Sequence #' and 'Placemark Description' dropdown menu to 'Office'. All other fields can be left blank.
6. Click 'OK'
